Increase Training for Ironman

Ironman - Triathlons- Ironman

Increase Training | Ironman

I’m starting to make a conscious effort to alter and increase training plans. I’m still focused on speed for the upcoming short course events. However, with my Ironman being only 5 months out, I’m very focused on distance and nutrition plans on the weekends. My plan going forward is to hammer out 3 hard days during the week along with 3 longer days on the weekend. This training scheme should give me the speed I need in the Olympic/sprint distance triathlons. But it should also give me the endurance on the weekends in order to set myself up for a huge endurance block starting in May. With that being said, not much to write about except for my training week.

Ironman - Triathlon - LogosWeekly totals for 3/19/12 – 3/25/12
Run: 13.0 miles
Bike: 153.0 miles
Swim: 6.0 Km
spin: 1 hour

Run: This weeks runs were very nice. 1 medium, 1 speed/tempo, 1 long recovery. Not much to write about. Easy run week

Bike: This week was awesome for cycling! I participated in the Beauty and the Beast event in Tyler, Texas. There were over 800 riders. The event was very well organized and provided rest stops every 10 miles along the 67 mile course. It was a scenic ride and really enjoyable. My buddy headed over with me and we cruised with a pretty nice pace the whole way. We finally made it to the “beast” and let me tell you, It was TOUGH! I really had to crank out the gears to make it to the top and quite a few people were walking their bikes. The ‘BEAST” is no joke.
Following Saturday’s ride, I had a long ride Sunday to work on my Ironman tempo. My same buddy lended me his racing wheels to see if I liked them. I’ll be using them for Ironman Louisville, so I better like them! They were pretty impressive. I improved my PR avg by .8 MPH which is pretty significant. I’m excited going forward and continue to make increases every week.

Swim: Swimming this week was very nice! I’ve started to swim with other triathletes (some elite) and it has really picked up my sets! No longer am I just repping out lap after lap. Now I’m doing quite a bit of sprint work with distance mixed in. It’s a nice change and really works my swimming ability.

This week was the longest training week I’ve had to date. I was training for roughly 14 hours this week and I only expect that to go up. I’m excited for where I’ve come, but I have so much farther to go. The only thing I can do is….

Just Keep Livin’
